Community guidelines

JessChat is for private conversation. These are the limits, and what we do when somebody crosses them.
Not allowed
| Category | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Child safety | Any sexual content involving a minor, and any attempt to groom, solicit, or sexualise a child. There is no warning and no second chance for this: the account is removed and the matter is reported to the appropriate authorities. |
| Harassment | Targeting somebody with abuse, repeated unwanted contact after being asked to stop, or coordinating others to do it. |
| Threats and violence | Threatening to hurt somebody, or encouraging others to. |
| Hate speech | Attacking people for who they are — race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation. |
| Non-consensual sexual content | Sharing intimate images of somebody without their consent, and threatening to. |
| Self-harm | Encouraging suicide or self-harm. If you are struggling, the section below is for you. |
| Impersonation | Pretending to be another person, an organisation, or JessChat staff. |
| Spam and malware | Bulk unsolicited messaging, scams, phishing, and sending files intended to harm a device. |
How to report something
-
Open the conversation, the message, or the profile.
-
Choose Report.
-
Pick the category that fits and describe what happened in your own words.
What you write in that description is read by the moderator who reviews the report — it is the most useful part, so say what happened rather than leaving it blank. You can also attach the specific message or file you are reporting.
Nothing else from your conversation is sent. Our moderators cannot open your chats. They see the report category, your description, and only what you chose to attach. If you do not attach anything, they have your description and nothing more.
You can also block anybody, which stops them messaging or calling you, immediately and without telling them. Blocking and reporting are separate: you can do either, or both.
What happens to a report
-
It goes into a queue, oldest first. No report is skipped because of who filed it.
-
A moderator takes it and reviews it.
-
They record a decision with a written reason, which is kept.
-
If the report is upheld, enforcement is a separate decision, made deliberately — upholding a report does not automatically suspend anybody.
Every action a moderator takes on an account — a suspension, a ban, a reinstatement, a verification — requires a stated reason and is recorded in an audit log that cannot be edited afterwards.
If you are on the receiving end of a decision
You can appeal by emailing [email protected]. Someone other than the person who made the original decision will review it. Suspensions can be lifted; a ban can be reviewed.
If you are struggling
If you are thinking about harming yourself, please talk to someone now. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, call 116 123 (Samaritans). Elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists a service for your country. JessChat is not a crisis service and cannot reach anybody on your behalf.
